Higher summer electric rates take effect in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Higher summer electric rates are now in effect for millions of Michigan residents.
With this, it could mean the time of day customers use electricity could have a bigger impact on their monthly bills.
“Between the hours of 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays, customers are going to be charged a summer rate that may look a little different once you get your bills,” said Megan Kirk with Consumers Energy. She added that they have other hours that are considered lower-cost hours, which include “morning hours, evening hours, and on the weekends.”
The utility encourages customers to reduce energy use during peak hours when possible and make small adjustments around the home, such as keeping curtains closed to block sunlight and limiting the amount of cool air escaping outdoors.
For residents struggling to keep up with utility costs, Michigan 211 says assistance may be available.
“The work that we do on the back end to make sure we have valid resources and kind of sift through all the noise and all the misinformation out there,” said Chad Veeser with Michigan 211. “And that’s where we can find hopefully some relief at times.”
Michigan 211 connects callers with local resources, including utility assistance programs. Veeser told News 10, “there’s so many ways that you plug into those programs,” adding that the available programs can change frequently, making it important for residents to reach out early if they need help.
Residents can dial 211 or visit the Michigan 211 website to learn about resources available in their area.
