Michigan Democrats want to make more polluters pay for cleanup

LegislativeDemocratsrolledoutbillsMondaytotoughenMichigan’spollutioncleanupstandardsandforcebusinessesthatcausedcontaminationtofootthebillevenifithappeneddecadesago.
AkeyelementwouldbeamendingaportionofMichigan’sNaturalResourcesandEnvironmentalProtectionActthatallowsresponsiblepartiestocloseoffaccesstolandorgroundwaterinlieuofcompletelycleaningitup.
SenatorJeffIrwin(D-AnnArbor)saidnearly27,000suchsitesexistinMichiganandpollutersshouldfinishthejobofcleaningthemup.
“Halfofthosehavebeenorphaned,havebeenleftbehindbycompaniesforthetaxpayerstocleanup,”hetoldMichiganPublicRadio.“Wedon’thaveenoughmoneytocleanupthesesites,sothesitesremainpolluted,remainathreattocommunities,andweneedtomakesurethatweholdcompaniesaccountableandtheyneedtocleanuptheirownmess.”
