Lawmakers seek to expedite housing development approvals

DETROIT – Metro Detroit households spend more than $22,000 a year on housing — more than 30% of their budgets.
Home prices have skyrocketed, now about six times the average income, up from two to three times in previous years.
A big reason for the rising prices is a shortage of homes. That’s why bipartisan lawmakers have introduced legislation aimed at making it easier and more affordable to build homes.
The bill would allow duplexes, cut parking requirements, and speed up approval processes.
If passed, the legislation could help make homes more affordable for Michigan families.
State Rep. Joseph Aragona, one of the authors of the bill, joined Local 4 Live to talk more about the proposed legislation.
