LANSING, Mich. (News 10) – A new state selected House committee is examining how ballot initiatives are reviewed in Michigan.
State leaders met to discuss petitions regarding the current process.
More than 700,000 signatures were submitted by Americans for Citizen Voting in an effort to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot.
Michigan’s process relied on a statistical sample of 1,000 signatures to determine the validity of a submission containing hundreds of thousands of signatures.
The committee is examining the process after the proposal did not advance.
“We have to separate the issue from the process. Because the integrity of the system cannot depend on whether we happen to like the outcome that it produces. If this process is fair, it should withstand scrutiny. If the process is sound, the evidence should demonstrate it. And if the process has weaknesses, we have an obligation to find and address them,” Rep. Mike Harris said.
The committee is determined to find whether or not the current process needs to change.
