Don’t miss out: Sept. 30 is the deadline for Michigan’s energy bill tax credit

SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) – Qualified renters and homeowners have until the end of the month to claim a home heating credit to save money on energy bills.
Michigan renters and homeowners have until Wednesday, Sept. 30, to submit a claim for the credit the state says helps eligible low-income households save money on energy costs during the colder months.
The state said in 2025 the average qualifying household received $171 in assistance, most often applied directly to utility bills. Some energy providers will also automatically provide claimants a residential income assistance credit that can be worth up to $20 monthly. Food assistance recipients who are seniors, disabled, or veterans that receive a credit of more than $20 could also qualify for increased benefits.
The credit cannot be claimed retroactively, so those who miss the deadline will lose the opportunity to receive this support.
To qualify for the credit, you must be either a renter with a contracted lease or a homeowner and meet these income requirements. The state said the most reliable way to claim the Home Heating Credit, along with other tax credits, is through the free tax preparation services.
