Federal officials tighten childcare funding rules, raising concerns in Michigan

KALAMAZOO,Mich.—Thefederalgovernmenthasannouncednewly-tightenedoversightofbillionsofdollarsinchildcarefundinggiventostatesinasweepingefforttostiflefraud,however,childcareadvocatesareraisingconcernsthatthemovecoulddisruptservicesforfamiliesandprovidersinMichiganaswellasaroundthecountry.
TheU.S.DepartmentofHealthandHumanServices(HHS),throughitsAdministrationforChildrenandFamilies,announceditisrescindingaseriesofBiden-erarulesthatrequiredstatestopaychildcareprovidersbeforecarewasdeliveredandbeforeattendancewasverified.
Thoseprovisionswerepartofa2024updatetotheChildCareandDevelopmentFund(CCDF),whichismeanttosubsidizecareforlower-incomeworkingfamilies.
Federalofficialssaythechangesarenecessaryafterallegedfraudschemesinvolvingfederally-fundedchildcareprograms,particularlyinMinnesota,whichiscurrentlyunderinvestigation.
