DETROIT–Aprogramthatprovidescashtohelpexpectantmotherscopewithbills,expensesandthehighcostoftakingcareofchildreniscomingtoDetroit.
DemocraticMayorMarySheffieldannouncedMondaythatMichiganStateUniversity’sRxKidsprogramisexpectedtoopeninthecitywithinthefirst100daysofhertakingoffice.SheffieldwaselectedinNovemberandwasinstalledlastweekasDetroit’sfirstfemalemayor.
Theprogramgivesaone-timeallocationof$1,500toexpectantmothersduringpregnancy.That’sfollowedby$500permonththroughoutthechild’sfirstsixmonthsafterbirth.Familiesareexpectedtousethemoneyforrent,utilities,food,diapers,babyformula,transportation,medicalcareandotheressentials.
Therearenoincomerequirements.Sign-upisonline.Recipientsmustverifytheyarepregnant.
