Undertheplandescribedtolawmakersincommitteehearingsoverthepastseveralweeks,DetroitwouldtakepossessionofthebuildingbyAug.1foraslittleas$1.
Thedetentioncenter,whichhasbeenunderstatecontrolsince2013,holdsDetroitarresteesfromthetimeoftheirarresttothepointoftheirarraignment,usuallyamaximumof72hours.
“ThisisauniquesituationforDetroit,”stateRep.AlabasFarhat,D-Dearborn,toldlawmakerslastmonthinacommitteehearingonthebill.“Manycitiesareabletosimplyholdinmatesthemselvesattheirpolicedepartmentsandlocalholdingcells.InthecityofDetroit,obviouslybeingalargercommunity,largercity,thisisaspacewheretheyutilizethisaswell.”
