DETROIT—Afterevadingauthoritiesonatwo-year-longmanhunt,anelusiveblackbearhasfinallybeencaughtinnorthernMichigan.
Theyoungblackbear,whichhadbeencarryingalidstuckarounditsnecksince2023,wascapturedbystatewildlifebiologistsinMontmorencyCountyinearlyJune,theMichiganDepartmentofNaturalResourcesannouncedWednesday.
Thebiologistsremovedthelid.
“It’snotasupercommonoccurrence,butoccasionallywedogetliketrailcameraphotossubmittedtousofabearorotherwildlifewiththeirheadsstuckineitherlidsorcontainerssimilartothis,”CodyNorton,theDNR’sbear,furbearerandsmallgamespecialist,toldTheDetroitNews.“Alotoftimes,thoseanimalsmightbeinveryremoteareasandwemightnotbeabletocatchuptohim.”
Thoughauthoritiesdon’tknowhowthemalebearcametogetitsheadstuckinthe5-inchholeofthelid,theylearneditwasablueplasticpiecesimilartothosethatfit55-gallondrumsusedbyhunterstobaitbearsorlandownerstostorematerialssuchaschickenfeedthatcanattracttheanimals.
