Michigan DNR explains fish kill as ice recedes and weather warms

MICHIGAN(WPBN/WGTU)—Astemperaturesstarttowarmup,youmaynoticedeadfishalongshorelinesoflakesandponds.
Thephenomenoniscalledfishkillandwemayseemoreofitthisspring.
“Thatbasicallyiswhenwehaveenoughiceandsnowthatdoesn’tallowlightpenetrationdownintothesubstrateandsubsequentvegetationthatareintheselakes,”MichiganDNRHealthStocking&MarketingBiologistJeremiahBlaauwsaid.
Andthatleadstotheplantsdyinganddecomposing,takinguptheremainingoxygen,causingthefishtosuffocate.
“Normally,thishappensunderneaththeice.Butthenwhenwestartgettingthesewarm-updaysinthespringtime,thosedecomposersstartmakingairpocketsinthosefishandtheyhaveatendencytofloatuptothetoponcetheicerecedes,”Blaauwsaid.“Thenwiththespringwinds,theygetkindofdispersedacrossthelakes.Andthat’swhenpeoplenormallytypicallyseetheminthelakesthatthey’revisiting.”
