ARepublican-ledstateHousecommitteeopenedhearingsTuesdayonaproposedamendmenttotheMichiganConstitutionthatwouldrequirepeopletoshowproofofcitizenshiptoregistertovote.Themeasurewouldalsorequirepeopletoshowagovernment-issuedIDbeforetheycancastaballot.
ThehearingbeforetheHouseElectionIntegrityCommitteeturnedintoashowdownbetweenRepublicansandconservativegroupswhoargueitistooeasyfornon-citizensorineligiblepeopletogetaballotagainstDemocratsandthecampaignthatsuccessfullyaddedtwovotingrightsamendmentstotheMichiganConstitution.
“WecanensurethatonlyU.S.citizensarevotinginourelectionswithoutcreatingasituationwhereweareoverburdeninganybody,”saidRep.BryanPosthumus(R-CannonTwp.)“TherighttovotebelongsintheConstitution.That’sthere.Therequirementthatonlycitizensshouldvoteinourelectionsshouldbethere.That’swhatI’mtryingtoputinthere.”
