Memorial park plans in Kalkaska County getting design help from Michigan State University

KALKASKA COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) — Northern Michigan’s newest recreational area, the Patriot Park Veterans Memorial in Kalkaska County is blanketed in snow.
Work at the actual parcel of land is on pause for the winter, but there is work being done more than 100 miles away by some volunteers you may not expect.
“It’s snowballed so fast. It’s really exciting,” said Dave Halachukas. “”It’s out of this world the momentum.”
Halachuckas shared his plans with UpNorthLive last year to transform the 80-acres of land into a community resource, which includes a tribute to those who have served our country.
“It’s gonna be a huge benefit for our little community,” said Halachuckas.
But it’s more than just that little community getting invested and putting in the work.
Michigan State University (MSU) instructor Bob Wilson knows a lot about building trails, so much so he literally wrote on the book on it. Wilson now passes along that knowledge to his students on campus in East Lansing.
