GOP-led panel holds hearing on repealing Michigan’s gun seizure law

AstateHousecommitteeheldahearingWednesdayonRepublican-sponsoredbillstorepealMichigan’s“redflag”law,whichallowsauthoritiestouseacourtordertoseizegunsfrompeopledeemedarisktothemselvesorothers.               AlawtoallowtemporaryextremeriskprotectionorderswasenactedlastyearwhenDemocratscontrolledtheLegislatureandinresponsetoinstancesofmassshootingsandothergunviolence.               RepresentativeJamesDaSana(R-Carleton),oneofthesponsorsofbillstoreversethe“redflag”law,saidtheyaretopreventtheabuseoftherightsofpeoplewhohavenotbeenchargedwithorconvictedofcrimes.Hesaidthecurrentlawfailstoaddressrootcausesofviolence.               “Thereisabetterwaytohandlethisthantakinggunsawayfromlaw-abidingcitizens,”hesaid.               RepresentativeJayDeBoyer(R-Clay)saidtheLegislatureshouldbelookingatimprovingmentalhealthservicesinsteadoftakinggunsfrompeople.
