Sinceitsstartin1988,DetroitBlightBustershasbeenknownfordemolishingorrenovatingabandonedhouses,cleaningupneighborhoodsandhelpingpatrolthecity’sstreetsagainstarsononwhatwasoncecalled“Devil’sNight.”
Lately,followingsignificantimprovementstoDetroit’sblightandarsonsituations,thenonprofitorganizationanditsenergeticcofounder,JohnGeorge,67,havebranchedintolarge-scaleaffordablehousingdevelopment—particularlyprojectsinvolvingfederalLowIncomeHousingTaxCreditsthatarelocatednearBlightBuster’sheadquartersinthecity’snorthwestneighborhoodofOldRedford.
Thisspring,anewlyconstructed48-unitdevelopment,OrchardVillageApartments,openedonwhathadbeenvacantlotsat 21665OrchardSt.,justoffGrandRiver,asajointprojectofBlightBustersandthenonprofitCleveland-baseddeveloperCHNHousingPartners.
