Lockdowns, masks and death: Looking back on 5 years of COVID

Michiganders were voting in the primary election and planning their St. Patrick’s Day festivities when the state reported its first confirmed COVID-19 infections in March 2020.

Within days, schools and businesses closed their doors, churches canceled service, professional sports froze competition, and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer banned dine-in service and gatherings of more than 50 people.
