LANSING, Mich. (News 10) -Michigan students are reading below state goals, and the newest test results show third graders are at their lowest level in more than a decade.
The state tests students to see whether they have mastered the reading skills expected for their grade. This year, only about four in ten third graders met that standard.
Reading scores also dropped for students in fourth through seventh grade. State leaders say results need to improve.
The scores don’t mean every student who did not meet the standard cannot read, but they do show more students are falling short of state expectations.
State response
Michigan is responding with new reading requirements, including “science of reading” training for elementary teachers, state-approved curriculum, and more literacy support.
Many of those changes are still being put in place. Full teacher training requirements will not take effect until the 2031-32 school year.
