Groundwater survey begins soon in southwest Michigan

You may soon see helicopters carrying 60 foot wide sensor hoops around southwest Michigan.
Our reporting partners at WSJM Radio say the US Geological Survey and Michigan Department of Environment will conduct a collaborative study on groundwater.
The electromagnetic sensors will try to determine what is below the surface, like clay, water, sand or bedrock, in several counties including Eaton, Van Buren, Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph, and Branch.
The helicopters will fly about 200 feet above the ground, but will avoid flying over people and buildings.
They are set to begin sometime this spring and run through the fall, weather permitting.
