Michigan State Police warn of scam targeting older adults

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The Michigan State Police are warning residents about a scam that uses fear tactics to trick older adults.
In a recent case in the Upper Peninsula, a woman was told by scammers that her computer had been hacked. She was instructed to provide personal information, including her address and Social Security number, to “verify her identity.”
According to police, the scammers told her to withdraw money from her bank and threatened to arrest her if she did not comply. They claimed a federal agent would come to her home to collect the money.
When the woman went to the bank, employees recognized the situation as suspicious and alerted her. She then went to her local Michigan State Police post and did not send any money.
Police remind the public that government agencies do not request personal information or money in this way and do not share personal information with strangers.
