Michigan House passes bill that would ban kratom sales entirely

LANSING, Mich. (WJRT) – The Michigan Legislature took a big step toward banning the sale and cultivation of kratom statewide on Wednesday.
The Michigan House voted 56-43 to approve House Bill 5537, which would entirely ban kratom or any synthetic substitutes for it and remove it from store shelves.
Kratom is an herbal supplement that can cause effects similar to opioids in humans. It has been used to treat chronic pain, anxiety or opioid addictions.

However, the National Institutes of Health has warned that kratom can cause severe negative health implications, especially in high doses taken by young people. The substance has been blamed for serious injuries and deaths.
The Food and Drug Administration will not allow it to be marketed as a drug, supplement or food additive.
“What we are experiencing with kratom is a crisis,” said Republican State Rep. Cam Cavitt of Cheboygan, who sponsored the bill.

With no ban in Michigan, anyone can cultivate or purchase kratom legally. The substance can be found in many party stores and convenience stores regardless of their age.
“These products are being marketed towards our kids, and many parents aren’t even aware that it’s happening,” Cavitt said. “Our children are being poisoned by products that they can easily purchase at gas stations.”
After passing the House, the bill now heads to the Michigan Senate for consideration. If passed there, the bill would go to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for her signature or veto.
“Protecting the lives of children should not be controversial,” Cavitt said. “We need to get kratom off our streets.”
