Michigan bans cellphones in school as more states move to end classroom distractions

MichiganGov.GretchenWhitmerhassignedanewlawtobansmartphonesfrompublicschoolclassroomsstartingthisfall,joininganincreasingnumberofstates—includingCalifornia—thathavemovedtokeepthedevicesoutofinstructionaltime.
“Weknowthatphonesimpedeastudent’sabilitytolearn,”Whitmersaidlastweek.“Theyarebyfarthemostdisruptivedistractioninourclassrooms…designedtokeepyouscrolling,andteachersstrugglingtokeeptheclassengagedwhilecompetingagainstsocialmedia.”
Underthenewlaw,studentswillstillbeabletohavephoneswiththematschool,butsmartphoneswon’tbeallowedduringinstructionaltime.Studentscouldcarrybasicphones,anditwillbeuptoschoolofficialstodeterminehowrigidlytoenforcethepolicymovingforward.
WhilemanyMichiganschoolshavealreadyadoptedtheirowncellphonepolicies,thenewlawwillcreatebaselineregulationsforallpublicschooldistricts,whereofficialscouldstillconsiderstricterrules.
