Lake Michigan’s water levels drop rapidly, raising concerns about climate impact

“We’reabout12inchesbelowthelong-termaverageforthelake,”WatershedCenterGrandTraverseBayWaterkeeperHeatherSmithsaid.“Wearelowerthanlastmonthandcertainlylowerthanwewerelastyear.”
Smithsaidthecurrentdropisnormalforthistimeofyear,butthespeedofthedeclineisunusualandconcerning.
“LakeMichiganandLakeHuronarestillabovethelowestlowonrecord.There’saboutafootandahalftogobeforereachingthatlowestlowonrecord,”Smithsaid.“However,wearepredictedtocontinuefallingintowinter,whichispartofanormalcyclefortheGreatLakes.”
