Inresponse,Rep.JohnRoth,R-104thDistrict,hasproposeda3%taxonshort-termrentalsbookedthroughplatformslikeAirbnbandVRBO. Rothemphasizedthatthetaxwouldonlyapplyiflocalvoterssupportit,describingitasan“opt-outpossibility.” Rothnoted,“Iwillsaythatafterthesebillswereannounced,wedidgetagoodresponsefromthehotelsandlodgingandtherestaurantpeopleandthelocalMichiganMunicipalLeagueandtheMTA.” Headded,“Wewantpushback.Wewanttheconversationtobehad.” AndwhenhecosponsoredaseriesofbillsinLansingthataddressshorttermrentals,conversationsfromvariousorganizationsthatwouldbeimpactedspokeup. “Theyallkindofcameoutsaidholdonholdonwewanttobepartofthisdiscussion,”Rothsaid.
