Michigan lawmakers weigh intervening as food assistance cutoff looms
DemocratswhocontrolthestateSenatesaidWednesdaytheyareexploringthepossibilityofinterveningandattemptingtopreventabout1.4millionMichiganresidentsfromlosingaccesstofoodaid,beginningthisweekend,amidthefederalgovernmentshutdown.
Butthelawmakers’efforts,whichcouldincludeallocatingabout$250milliontofundSupplementalNutritionAssistanceProgrambenefitsinthestateforamonth,faceadifficultanduncertainroadinthenarrowlydividedLegislature.
It’sunclearwhethertherewouldbeenoughvotestopassabillintheDemocratic-controlledSenate.Plus,RepublicanshaveamajorityoftheseatsintheHouse,whichwouldalsohavetosupportsuchameasureforittobecomelaw.
OnWednesday,stateSen.KevinHertel,D-St.ClairShores,saidhewouldsupportfindingawaytokeepSNAPaidgoinginMichiganandhelpfoodbanksmeettheneedthattheloominglossoffoodassistanceisalreadycreating.
“Wehavetodoeverythingwecantohelp,”Hertelsaid
