InalawsuitfiledbyBethanyChristianServices,aGrandRapids-basedsocialserviceagencythathadhistoricallyprovidedrefugeeresettlementservicesinMichigan,lawyersforthestatehavefiledaresponsearguingthatBethanyChristianshouldnotbegrantedthecontinuedpreliminaryinjunctionthattheyareseeking.
ThesuitallegesthatthestatediscriminatedagainstBethanyChristianfortheirpolicyofhiringonlyemployeeswhoalignwiththegroup’s“statementoffaith,”bynotrenewingacontractforrefugeeresettlementfunding,whichismanagedbytheOfficeofGlobalMichigan,orOGM.
Thecase,filedinfederalcourtintheWesternDistrictofMichigan,hasnowstretchedoverayearsinceitwasfirstfiledinSeptember2024.Inastipulatedpreliminaryinjunctiongrantedsoonafter,theofficeagreedtocontinuetwoofBethany’sthreecontractsfortheirfinalyear— avalueof$1,000,000.
