DETROIT–TheDetroitPoliceAthleticLeague(PAL)servesmorethan9,000youthacrossthecity,butCEOFredHunterseespotentialtoreachmanymoreamidrisingconcernsaboutyouthviolence.
RecentDetroitPoliceDepartmentdatashowsa33%increaseinyoungvictimsofgunviolencecomparedtothesameperiodlastyear.Casesinvolvingpeopleunder17caughtwithgunshaverisennearly20%.
“Thedatashowscrimesarehappeningatyoungerages.We’reseeing11-year-oldsto17-year-oldswhodon’thavepositiveactivitiestobeinvolvedwithouttherecommittingcrimes,”Huntersaid.
YouthDevelopmentBeyondSportsWhileknownforits12sportsprograms,DetroitPALfocusesoncomprehensiveyouthdevelopmentthroughenrichment,leadershipandacademicinitiatives.Theorganizationoperatesin120locationsthroughoutDetroit,deliberatelypositioningprogramswheretheycanreachthemostvulnerableyouth.
