DanHeckman,aforestplanningandmodelingspecialistwiththeMichiganDepartmentofNaturalResources,saidWednesdaythattherearenearly700milesofstateforestroadsthathavebeendeemed“impassable,”andmonthsofworkaheadtoclearthoseroadsandthethousandsmoremilesthathaveyettobeassessed.
“Youknow,Ithinktheone-worddescriptionwouldbea‘mess,'”hesaid.
ThestormsthatsweptthroughNorthernMichiganandtheUpperPeninsulainlateMarch,downedtreesandknockedoutpower,promptingGovernorGretchenWhitmertodeclareastateofemergencyacrossawidestretchofthestate.
Heckmansaidthebreadthofthedamageishardtograsp.“Thebigimpactthat’shardtowrapyourheadaroundisthatit’simpactingover3millionacresoflandacrossallownershipsinthenorthernLowerPeninsula,”hesaid.“Aboutamillionofthatisstateforestlandthatwe’rehavingtodealwith.”
