Nessel asks Michigan Supreme Court to restore anti-terrorism law

TheamicusbrieffromNesselcomesafterathree-judgeMichiganCourtofAppealspanellastmonthfoundthe2002lawcriminalizingterroristicthreatsorfalsethreatsofterrorismwasunconstitutional.ThedecisionupendedafalseterrorismreportchargeagainstaGrosseIleboywhowasallegedtohavethreatenedTrentonPublicSchools.
InastatementMonday,Nessel’sofficenotedtheattorneygeneralhaseightpendingcasesbroughtunderthe2002statutethatcouldbecompromisedbytheappellatedecision.
“Strikingdownthiscruciallawhindersmyoffice’sabilityandtheabilityofprosecutorsinall83countiesfromdoingtheirjobstoholdthosewhothreatenourcommunitiesaccountable,makingMichiganlesssafe,”Nesselsaidinastatement.
