Report: Michigan population getting older, UP moving in right direction

UPPER MICHIGAN (WLUC) – A new report says Michigan’s population is aging and bringing younger people into the state is a problem.
However, there is some good news regarding the young adult population in the Upper Peninsula.
From 2010 to 2024, Michigan saw a 2.2% decrease in population of people aged 18 to 64. The U.S. average was a 5.4% increase in the same time frame.
This is according to Michigan Senate Fiscal Agency Chief Economist David Zin, who says the older population has a negative effect on the state’s economy.
“Onceyou’veretired,incomegrowthislessthanwhenyouareworking,”saidZin.“So,that’soneofthosefactorsthat’sgonnahelpdepressthegrowthinourtaxspace.”
Whenitcomestothenumberofworkersinthestatewhohaveabachelor’sdegree,Michiganis34thinthecountry,whileColoradoissixth.
“They(Colorado)madesubstantialinvestmentsinthetechindustryanumberofdecadesago,”saidZin.“Thatwasgonnaattract,andretain,peoplethathadhighereducation.”
