Lansing—Lt.Gov.GarlinGilchristIIannouncedMondayhe’sdroppinghiscampaignforgovernorinordertolaunchabidtobeMichigan’snextsecretaryofstate.
Theswitchhasbeenintheworksforweeksandwillhaveawaveofpoliticalrepercussions.ItmeanscurrentSecretaryofStateJocelynBensonhasaclearerpathtotheDemocraticnominationforgovernor.HerloneremainingopponentintheAugustprimaryisGeneseeCountySheriffChrisSwanson.
Likewise,Gilchrist,43,ofDetroit,whowasGov.GretchenWhitmer’srunningmatein2018and2022,islikelytobecomethebiggestnameeitherpartyhasintheraceforsecretaryofstate.
