Nearly6in10votersinthetownshipalongMichigan’sborderwithIndianaapprovedaballotmeasureprohibitinganycannabisstoresfromopeningthere.Manyresidentssaidtheydidn’twanttoseetheirtownshiplookliketherestofBerrienCounty,where27potshopsoperate,includingsevenintheneighboringcityofNiles.
Thatvote—andanotheronNov.4limitingmarijuanastoresintheUpperPeninsulacityofMenominee,alongtheWisconsinborder—comeatatimeofuncertaintyforMichigan’scannabisindustry.
PothasproliferatedacrossMichigan—therearenowmorethan850storesacross75ofMichigan’s83counties—andthathasdrivendownprices,promptingoneofthebiggestcannabisretailerstoexitthestatethisyear.Statelawmakershaveimposedanew24%wholesaletaxpassedaspartofaroad-fundingdealandsomelawm
