TheU.S.Attorney’sOfficefortheEasternDistrictofNewYorkhasopenedafederalinvestigationintofree-agentguardMalikBeasleyrelatedtogambling,hislawyer,SteveHaney,confirmedtoTheAthletic onSunday.
HaneysaidthatBeasley,whospentlastseasonwiththeDetroitPistons,isapersonofinterestintheinvestigation,butthatnoformalallegationshadbeenmadeandnochargesfiled.
“Thisissimplyaninvestigation,”Haneysaid.“Atthispoint,Malikhasnotbeenchargedwithanycrimeandtherehasbeennoformalaccusationofwrongdoing.Hopefullyeveryonewillaffordhimthatsamepresumptionofinnocencethateveryoneelsedeserves.”
AspokesmanfortheEasternDistrictdeclinedtocomment,asdidBeasley’sagent.AspokespersonforthePistonsconfirmedtheexistenceofafederalinvestigationbutdeferredfurthercommenttotheNBA.
