Young Detroit Tigers are growing up together in the middle of raising babies
—
Detroit Tigers pitcher Will Vest stood next to a Ping-Pong table in the clubhouse at Comerica Park. His right arm was hooked up to a small, portable machine that he was using for therapy, but all of his concentration was on his son Bennett.
“Here you go,” Will said, tossing a small plastic ball toward his 2½-year-old son. It was late Monday afternoon after the Tigers beat the New York Yankees. Bennett swung a paddle, crushing the ball.
“Woo-hoo!” Will said. “Run the bases.”
Right on cue, Bennett ran around the table, touching imaginary bases on the carpet.
Now, it’s important to consider everything else that was going on at that moment. Reporters were walking around the room, talking to different players. Some of the Tigers were still in the shower, others were sitting on chairs in front of their lockers and Bennett was rounding third in an adorable father-and-son moment.
“Safe!” Will screamed, still hooked up the machine. “Good job, bud.”
